Oak Swill baskets
are traditionally made in the Lake
District and some parts of Wales.
They are strong, durable, oval
baskets made by weaving thin strips
of coppiced oak around a hazel
rim. Learn the cleaving, boiling
and riving of oak, the steaming
and bending of a hazel frame and
the use of drawknives, froe and
swiller’s mare. You will go home
with one traditional oak swill
basket.
Owen Jones has been making these
durable and attractive baskets
for almost twenty years. Although
it is quite an intensive three
days no previous experience or
special skills are required.
