A rare opportunity to see drawings, photographs and jewellery designed
and made by the late Sarah Jane Connor.
Sarah was a talented artist who lived and worked locally in Madeley.
In recent years she was a volunteer in Coalport Museums and at the
Greenwood Centre itself, where she helped maintain the ancient woodland.
Trained in 3 D Design, Silversmithing and Jewellery (Preston 1993),
Sarah gained a first class honours degree and went on to work within
the Manchester Design and Craft Centre as a Designer Maker of Events
Jewellery. She exhibited jewellery at Manchester’s Royal Exchange
Theatre and fulfilled many commissions.
The exhibition includes several works which have been especially
designed to reflect the personal histories and interests of wearer’s,
overall the collection draws together individually crafted and commissioned
jewellery, detailed design proposals and a broad range of inspiring
photographic works
Working predominantly in silver, Sarah’s design work is richly documented
through many drawings and reveals a keen sense of humour and a delight
in the kinetic function of insects and industrial machinery.
One of Sarah’s many inspiring photographic works will be published
by Cancer Research in July 2009.

Bank Holiday Monday 31st August
12-4.30pm Dale End Park
The Coracle Regatta now holds an established
place in the Ironbridge calendar attracting
coraclers from all over the country. There
will be sprint races, relays, the highly
competitive coracle polo match and other
daft games. Be prepared to get wet!
The Regatta is also a lovely day out,
with stalls and activities and the chance
to have a go yourself. You are welcome
to bring your own coracle if you have one.

Coracles
are flat bottomed boats made from woven
wood covered in animal skins - or, more
often nowadays, canvas sewn on and waterproofed
with tar or bitumen. Coracles have been
used for thousands of years in Europe
and especially in Wales and the Welsh
borders. Every region and even villages
had their own design, many still around
today. Coracles were used for fishing,
ferrying and - commonly in Ironbridge
- for poaching.
The Green Wood Centre would like to
pay tribute to Eustace Rogers who sadly
died in 2004. He was the last in a
long line of Ironbridge Coracle Makers
and was a familiar sight to many in
the Gorge. He was kind enough to share
his knowledge with the Green Wood Centre
which has enabled us to teach coracle
making to hundreds of people from all
over the world.

Saturday 10th October 2009
Last year’s Apple Day was a resounding
success and this year it hopes to be just
as good. The centrepiece will be the beautifully
restored traditional twin-screw apple press,
a piece of equipment dating back to the
mid-19C. It requires nothing but muscle
power to operate them and last year was
busy all day, pouring out some 200 gallons
of apple juice.
Shropshire Apple Trust who are responsible
for having restored the equipment and organising
the event are again inviting people from
all over the County (and beyond) to bring
their apples in the two weeks prior to
the event. Bring as many apples as possible
- of whatever variety - and take them to
the Green Wood Centre.
|
|
| |
|
 |
The fun doesn't
stop at the pressing, either. Taste a wide
variety of old and unusual varieties as
well as good examples of common apples.
This year there will also be a huge display
of different apple varieties from around
the country, including some particular
to Shropshire. There will be 'hands-on'
craft demonstrations of the work of the
Green Wood Centre including pole lathing,
suitable for adults and children alike.
Children are particularly well catered
for with apple bobbing, apple prints and
even their own small-scale apple pressing
equipment - try stopping them drinking
the juice! There will be a pork roast and
vegetarian food option and the chance to
try and buy country wines and cider, including
that made by Shropshire Apple Trust who
dreamed up the whole occasion here in the
first place!

Support your local woods:
use coppiced hazel beanpoles to
support your beans this year!
The area of coppice in the UK has
fallen dramatically since the 1950s
and we need to bring these woods
back into management.
Hazel coppice provides valuable
habitat for animals such as the dormouse, nightingales,
warblers and many more species.
Coppicing is a traditional and sustainable
form of woodland management that
ensures a continuous supply of useful
products.
Hazel beanpoles provide an attractive
and effective addition to your garden.
