Funded Courses

Small Woods Association provide subsidised courses when funding is available to support training.

The following programmes are currently available, please contact us for further information and availability of funding.


Wood Works Professional Short Courses 2011

Woodworks III is a Lantra funded programme offering reduced price training to those employed in land-based industries within the West Midlands. 

To be eligible for funding you must work in the West Midlands and be engaged in forestry or be farmers with woodland on your holding.
   
   
Woodland and timber measuring and estimating         September 16
   
Techniques for measuring, estimating and evaluating the size volume and value of standing staked timber.
   
Sustainable Woodland management OCN level 3 November 16 – 19
   
Intensive 3 day course designed to provide woodland owners and managers an understanding of managing woodlands sustainably
   
Hedge Laying OCN level 2 November 7 – 11
   
This is a 5 day practical course covering all aspects of hedge laying
   
Coppicing OCN Level 2                                                             November 16 – 19
   
This is a 4 day practical course covering all aspects of coppice management. The aim of the course is to provide sufficient knowledge, practical experience, confidence and encouragement to allow participants to continue practicing coppice management
   
Hedge Laying OCN Level 2                                                      December 3- 4 and 10 – 11
   
A 4 day course covered over 2 weekends covering all aspects of hedge laying.
 
 

Woodfuel East Woodland Management Courses  Autumn/ Winter 2011/2012

A series of woodland management courses for people working within the land based sector including farmers, woodland owners, managers and workers.
   
   
Introduction to Small Woodland Management  OCN Level 3                 October 22 – 23
   
2 day course investigating all areas required to complete a woodland management plan. The course is class room based with tours of local woodlands. The course covers different woodland types and management systems,  legislation and woodland  grant applications.
   
Sustainable Woodland Management OCN Level 3                                   November 10- 12
   
Intensive 3 day course designed to provide woodland owners and managers an understanding of managing woodlands sustainably
   
Coppicing OCN Level 2                                                                         November 21- 25
   
This is a 4 day practical course covering all aspects of coppice management. The aim of the course is to provide sufficient knowledge, practical experience, confidence and encouragement to allow participants to continue practicing coppice management.
 
 


Lantra – Women and Work

The project aims to:

  • Increase female participation in training by developing a personalised training plan

  • Increase the number of women progressing in non-traditional occupation areas – impacting positively on the gender imbalance within the sector

  • Develop an employer mentoring scheme to underpin and embed the knowledge gained during the training project

  • Ensure that women on the project progress their career into a managerial, supervisory, higher technical role; achieve a new qualification or gain increased responsibility/ability within the same job role or benefit from an increase in salary.

The programme can help businesses to support female employees to develop their skills.

Applicants must be a business, employee or volunteer within a business in the UK working in a number of land based areas, including:

  • Agriculture

  • Environmental conservation

  • Fencing

  • Game and wildlife

  • Trees and timber

All courses are taught by tutors who have many years experience and are practitioners in the areas they teach. The courses are designed to provide the basic knowledge needed to allow course participants to continue to practice and improve their skills and are suitable for any one wishing to improve their knowledge to a recognised standard.
