The Green Wood Centre has produced green oak
landscape furniture since 1990 to its own
registered designs. It is beautiful and
robust, ideal for country parks and
viewpoints. The products are made from
native grown oak which is worked in its
'green' unseasoned state. This offers a
number of advantages:
- green timber is cheaper than seasoned timber and is ideal for
outdoor furniture where it will season
and age naturally
- the products are competitively priced and substantially
cheaper than tropical hardwoods
- heartwood oak is classified as Durability
Class 1 (very durable) in the Building
Research Establishment Digest 429 "Timbers: Their natural
durability and resistance to preservative treatment"
published in 1998 (available from www.brebookshop.com),
i.e. a 50mm x 50mm section in contact with
the ground will have a life expectancy
of 15-25 years; a 100mm x 100mm section
would have twice this lifespan
- the use of sustainable green timber will
cut down on the use of imported tropical hardwoods and softwoods
and also of the chemicals required to
treat them later
- oak ages gracefully and actually hardens
over the years, making it exceptionally
hard to carve or burn and therefore virtually
vandal resistant
The Green Wood Centre is a charity which
promotes sustainable woodland management
and the use of local timber. The
sales of landscape furniture help
to support our charitable work.
