Restoring Marches Coppice Report Feb 2007

VOLUNTEERING IN THE GORGE

This is a partnership project with the Severn Gorge Countryside Trust, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, and many other contributors.

The aim is to develop opportunities for people to volunteer at the Green Wood Centre and the Severn Gorge Countryside Trust year-round.

At the Green Wood Centre Ron Smart will be leading a coppice restoration project and encouraging volunteers to help coppice local woodlands. There are plenty of training opportunities, both with Ron, and on the Green Wood Centre courses. Tasks so far have included deer fencing and tree planting at the Wrekin, and work at the Green Wood Centre, where the Cruck Barn has been beautifully converted into a volunteer centre.

The aim is for people to have fun, learn new skills and contribute to the management of this very special area. The project has received wide support, with funding from:

  • Heritage Lottery Fund

  • Esmée Fairbairn Foundation

  • Madeley and Broseley Parish Councils

  • Lloyds-TSB

  • the Forestry Commission

  • Defra

Please contact Ron Smart at the Green Wood Centre on 01952 432769, or email volunteers@greenwoodcentre.org.uk.
