National Coppice Restoration Project Background.

The coppicing and greenwood craft industry in the UK has been in serious decline over the last century. The estimated 250,000 hectares of coppice woodland that existed in the mid nineteenth century has declined to the current 22,000 hectares and this has contributed to the decline of many woodland species.

The national project, which has been funded by the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation, aims to restore and secure a national coppice resource that promotes the value and importance of the coppice sector as a method for delivering sustainable woodland management.

The project will promote the concept that sustainable coppice woodlands and the long term security of their unique species can only be achieved by establishing a balanced economic benefit. The project will seek to form long term management agreements between coppice groups and woodland owners and begin to gather evidence of benefits to bio-diversity through routine and long term monitoring.

The Project Network Officer will help deliver the National Coppice Restoration project based in the South. The project officer will network with coppice workers and greenwood craft workers initially within the Hampshire area to develop a business and training needs assessment.

The project officer post has been jointly funded by Small Woods Association and Hampshire County Council. The project officer will seek additional funding to support the coppice sector based on the results of the initial needs assessment and to secure the continuation and expansion of the post.

The project officer will be familiar with the issues effecting the coppice sector and will be able to communicate effectively with partner organisations and individuals within the sector.
