This
a practical hands on 5 day course
based at the greenwood centre
and local coppice woodlands.
The course
covers techniques for producing
a range of greenwood craft goods
made using traditional hand tools
and coppice material sourced
from local coppice woodlands.
Participants will
learn the natural qualities of different
trees and the range of products that
can be produced.
The course includes:
Splitting
and cleaving – methods and tools used to reduce
wood to
a usable
size using axes, billhooks and
throws for cleft gates, hurdles
etc.
Pole lathe
turning:
- participants will use a pole lathe
to produce
a simple turned item such as
chair legs
and base ball bats.
Weaving: Different
techniques and material used to produce
woven
panels, hurdles
and seats.
Joints
and fixtures – different methods used to join round
wood together
for framed chairs, garden
and woodland structures.
Charcoal – participants
will fill, fire, empty and grade
charcoal using a ring kiln.
The charcoal
will be
tested on a bar- b –q at
the end
of the course.
Participants will
produce a range of goods or a
single complex
item to take
home and will receive
sufficient information on tools,
equipment
and techniques
to continue practicing
and improving their skills.
